The neocortex is divided into four very important lobes. Each lobe does different things for the brain. The lobe we are going to talk about on this page is the occipital lobe.
Did you know that the saying, "You have eyes in the back of your head" does have some truth in it. The occipital lobe is in the back of your brain, and the occipital lobe is responsible for most of your sight.
The occipital lobe helps to recognize what you are seeing. It plays a role in remembering visual information.
It is one of the four main lobes in the cerebral cortex. It can't do all the work by itself so the rear end of the parietal and temporal lobes put all the visual memories with the rest of your memories that they keep.
Inside the occipital lobe is the main visual cortex. This part of the brain receives what you see from your eyes. The occipital lobe figures out what your eyes see. If your occipital lobe gets damaged you would not be able to understand what you are seeing, or if you kept your sight you would have visual illusions. Visual illusions can make things look bigger or smaller then they really are, make them lack color, or have unusual colors.
Vocabulary
Neocortex = a part of the cerebral cortex which helps with your sight and hearing,
that is known as the most recently changed part of the cortex.
